If every child in the world would be taught meditation, we would eliminate violence from the world in one generation. -Dalai Lama
I got a chance to sit down with Psychologist and Yogi, Colleen Ferone on the podcast today. Colleen is a NYS School Psychologist, a lecturer for the Psychology Department at St. Josephs College as well as a certified Yoga instructor.
She brought all of this knowledge together and created a program she will be teaching at Big Buddha Yoga and Barre in Quogue, NY. The program is called Kids Yoga and Mindful Meditation. And I think it could not have come at a better time.
Kids experience stress and anxiety just like adults do. If we take the time to teach them at a young age that it's ok to feel your feelings think of how much pain and suffering will be eliminated in the long run! Sometimes things are scary and sometimes you're going to be sad and here are some tools for you to have with you wherever you go for the rest of your life. And by the way, every single person you know, no matter what it "seems" like, feels bad sometimes.
Colleen describes the program on the podcast and the different tools and methods she is going to be sharing with the kids. It sounds like an amazing opportunity for parents to introduce their children to coping skills they need to have in the crazy world we are raising our children in.
One of the benefits of a yoga and meditation practice is having self awareness. To be self aware and to take ownership of who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are, what you do well and what do you need to work on and be aware of is an amazing gift to posess and will help you throughout your life. If you have this ability to be responsible, accountable and learn to listen to your body not your mind. Your "gut" instinct never lies and we need to pass on that knowledge that your body will never lie to you, we just have to learn to listen to it.
