The One About Self-Esteem

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. -Dr.Suess.

I got to sit down with my eldest, Beth, today my podcast, You Be You & I'll Be Me. We tried to think of the above quote but for some reason we couldn't come up with it. But it really does embody our conversation about self-esteem and growing up in an age of social media.

Everyone needs to unplug now and then. Leave the phone at home and go out in nature, reconnect to who you really are. Exercise, volunteer, do something for someone else who could use a helping hand. Don't compare yourself to anyone else and know that its ok to be different. In fact, being yourself and not conforming to what anyone else thinks you should be is the most important thing you can do for yourself! Be you, have fun and get it done!

Following your dreams is hard work but you can be anything you want to be if you want it bad enough and are willing to work for it.

#BLESSED

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

-Corinthians 13:13

I sat down this week with a long time family friend, Tyler Schulz. Tyler is a 20 something year old man who began attending his mother, Marybeth's, Bible study around 5 years ago. He found his mother's ability to interpret Bible versus in a way he could clearly understand and relate to started to resonate with him. His ultimate goal is to launch his own podcast and I spoke with him about what it's going to be all about.

It became a family affair when his three other brothers all began attending the Bible study, (and their Dad!), and realized that the love they felt through interpreting these versus should be shared with as many people that would listen.

Tyler understands how to convey this message, (not his opinion, just conveying a message), in a way that is palpable to anyone who is open minded enough to have a conversation about faith, hope, love and if you're ready for it...Jesus.

Tyler is funny and approachable and his authenticity about what he believes shines through in a completely legitimate way that would allow anyone to resonate with him and his family and the message they have to share. Which is when you get right down to it, is essentially love.

Tyler's podcast is coming soon! If you want to get in touch with him before then feel free to reach out to me and I will connect you.

Peace!

#postmomsyndrome

Your children's lives will be filled with rich experiences. Its good if yours is as well.

I found my new friend Jan Crable through her beautiful pictures of the mountains on Instagram and connected with her after I saw her post a hashtag that read, #postmomsyndrome. It really resonated with me and I knew exactly what she meant. I wasn't done being a mom. I will never be done with being a mom, and I don't ever want to be. Having my children has been the greatest privilege of my life and I love my family very much. However, there comes a time when your children inevitably grow up and go out on their own, and your role moves from, as we say on our podcast together, manager to consultant.

What does this look like and feel like? How do we figure out what is next, who we are and oh hey, hi husband, I remember you! We talk about the difference between tradition and ritual and how being flexible and open minded is going to make your new and ever changing role as this mom a lot easier on everyone. Including and especially yourself.

We chat about having a meditation practice and learning to appreciate and accept things for what they are, instead of worrying about what it's not. I loved chatting with Jan and I hope you love hearing it!

You can check out Jan's pictures

@jancrable and also on her other instagram photo she shares with a friend @mtnmamas

Thanks again Jan!

Never, Ever, Ever Give Up

As Winston Churchill famously said in 1941, Never, Ever, Ever Give Up. This is a quote that Angela, a woman I met through mutual connections on Instagram personifies. This past October, at 40 years old, Angela discovered she had suffered a stroke. This single mom of three boys tells her inspirational story on the podcast. I arrived at Angela's in the morning while she was blending her bulletproof coffee and her protein smoothie and had already gone to an hour long spin class earlier that morning. (I did mention she is recovering from a stroke, right??) I sat down and prepared to be inspired and she did not disappoint.

Through her journey she constantly looks for the silver lining. Her attitude and what she teaches to her children by example is quite simply, someone else always has it worse than you so pull yourself up by your bootstraps and keep moving forward and above all be nice.

Angela found that between her community, her family and friends and the brilliant idea of hiring a coach, Colette Lettieri, (who has formerly been on the podcast), has helped her tremendously in her recovery. She has learned and grown through this experience and chooses to see the good things brought on by her stroke and has put an emphasis going forward in her life to take care of herself. A thing that mother's, especially single mom's, usually feel like they simply don't have time to do.

Angela looks for the beautiful things and the good things and the things that make life a little better.  I feel very fortunate to have gotten a chance to sit down and talk to someone with such an upbeat and positive look on life.

Life is going to at some point, take you down to your knees. That is a fact for every one of us. How fast you get back up, dust yourself off and keep moving forward is what counts. Oh, and above all, be nice.

You can find out more about Angela on her blog   https://surfingandsequins.com/

Peace

A Work of Heart

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. –African Proverb

As I have said a million times, I love doing this for so many reasons but the best is getting to sit down with interesting people who are passionate about what they do. This time  I got to sit down with my friend , Kathy Eaton and her daughter Cailin Eaton. Cailin is a teacher at the Pine Street School, located in downtown New York right off of Wall Street.

The Pine Street School website states that ‘their aim is to create a secure, caring environment in which students optimize their development intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally. Students are encouraged to inquire, think critically, work collaboratively, and to construct meaning, reflect and take action, all the while having their natural curiosity in the world around them stimulated.’

At the Pine Street School they are part of the International Baccalaureate, (IB), program, as Cailin describes a PYP, which is the Primary Years Program.

They start with a specific curriculum and then work with parents and students to collaborate on a plan for that individual student, observe and adjust to see how that plan is working for the student as an individual, monitor goals and make adjustments accordingly. To get a more accurate understanding of what IB and PYP is and a better feel for the Pine Street School overall, please go to the website of the school http://www.pinestreetschool.com/

I loved chatting with Cailin about her life experiences that ultimately led her to The Pine School. In her bio on the school website it says, “Cailin’s passion lies within the philosophy that the best education does not tell students what to think but facilitates how to think creatively, learn deeply, act compassionately, and live fully.” Right on Cailin!

We all know everyone is different and everyone learns differently, we raise our children to believe and understand that they are individuals and to celebrate their differences. Yet when they get to school they are typically taught the same things the same way and if you don’t get it or understand it, sorry kid, we are moving on.  What happens if this feeling of for lack of a better word, I’ll say failure happens time and time again? There are wonderful public school teachers who are doing an outstanding job, whose hands are tied because of standardize mandates that schools have to abide by to receive funding. How do we begin to change the public school system? How do we begin to help great teachers reach levels of success that all children have the right to achieve? It seems like a daunting task but as a parent or any concerned citizen, start where you are. The horizon is overwhelming so lower the gaze and take one step at a time. If you’re a parent of a child in public school ask his or her teacher, what can I do to make this a more successful experience for my child or every child in this class? We have to pay attention, take responsibility for each other and care more. Our future depends on it.

This next generation is going to have to possess an arsenal of skill sets that no generation before them has ever had to acquire. This is something Cailin and the educators at the Pine Street School seem to have a firm grasp on. The atmosphere is one of a strong caring community, where children are nurtured and encouraged to express themselves in a variety of ways enabling them to foster that self confidence that will carry them far in life. I believe the quality of the life we live and the way we view the world is subject on how we value and perceive ourselves. It is imperative to love and value ourselves so we can love and value the world around us.

My hope is this next generation will grow up having the confidence that they hold the keys of success by understanding that we need and have compassion and empathy for each other. That alone we go fast, but together we go far.

Little Flower

Sometimes we need someone to simply be there. Not to fix anything in particular, but just to let us feel we are supported and cared about.

Yesterday I got an opportunity to sit down and talk to Corinne Hammons, CEO of Little Flower Children and Family Services. Their main campus is located in Wading River, right here on Long Island. They also have other locations in Brooklyn and Queens in an effort to provide services for everyone who needs it in the NY area.

She talks about what Little Flower does, who they help and how you can help too. The mission is to help vulnerable people of every age from children in Foster Care to disabled adults.

It's adoption awareness month and Little Flower has 11 children that are to be adopted in time to have a home for the holidays.

Please consider checking out Little Flower at http://www.littleflowerny.org/ Or email or call Vice President Maureen Fox at foxm@lfchild.org 718-875-3500 x5040

Ask Maureen how you can help and she will answer any and all questions and let you know how you can help.

The greatest thing in life is having an opportunity to help someone who needs it when you can. Thanks for listening to the podcast and considering helping the good people at Little Flower.

We are all in this together. And as Corinne says, We are all on a journey, doing the best we can.

Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen,

Today is going to be a good day and here’s why, because today, at least you’re you and that’s enough.

My friend, Lisa Fox and I sat down to talk about the Broadway production of a play we both saw and loved called Dear Evan Hansen. It’s a story about one teenage boy who is dealing with social isolation and anxiety in a social media driven world.

When I tell you there was not a dry eye in the house I am including Ben Platt, as Evan Hansen, who is crying his eyes out during his powerful performance.  How he has the energy, stamina and not to mention, the talent to put on one emotionally charged performance after another is just proof of his absolute genius acting ability.

I think this play is resonating with everyone who sees it because every single one of us has felt lonely or alone or on the outside looking in in some way shape or form or at least can have empathy for a kid that feels that way. We all want our kids to be happy, popular, no problems…But do we really? Aren’t all the things that make up a strong character come from the very things we try to shelter our children from? Sometimes you have to go through winter so you can appreciate the sun.

The songs are as good as the story. The opening number sang by the actors who play the parents of the main characters, Evan and Connor, is entitled “Anybody Got a Map?” I don’t think there is a parent alive who hasn’t felt that they are in over their head at some point while  raising their kids. (If it's not easy, your're probably doing something right!)

When our kids were little we would go through different struggles at different times in our lives and at the end of the day when we had a minute to slow down we would look at each other and just say “Are we doing this right?” But I think it’s good to question how you are doing. No one is perfect so don’t pretend that you have all the answers. The bravest thing you can ever do is show your vulnerability. That’s why I love comedians so much. They point out the truth about things that resonate with all of us. Oh you feel that way too? Phew, let’s all laugh about that. (or cry or both)

If you are a parent of a child who feels social isolation and social anxiety this is a great performance to take your child to so they can see, I’m not alone. And if your child doesn’t have that particular issue, take them to see this so they can become aware of the fact that everyone has a back story. Those kids aren’t just that quiet kid at school. They have a family and a home life and issues to deal with that makes them not so different than you.

Bravo Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Steven Levenson who collaborated to create this amazing and thought provoking show. If you can’t see the play, get the book. Talk about it with your kids.

We are all in this together…

Let's root for each other and watch each other grow...

Bridge Walker

The secret to happiness and peace is letting every situation be what it is, instead of what you think it should be.

I got to sit down with an old family friend, Denise Gray Meehan, author of the book Bridge Walker. The book is a memoir of Denise’s life spanning 7 decades starting when she was 7 and ending at 70. It starts off with tales of growing up with four sisters and her parents in an almost storybook like existence in a more innocent time, taking us through the 50’s to today.

The book follows Denise as she goes to college, get’s married, has children and moves to the east end of Long Island to the hamlet of Hampton Bays. In between are personal stories from her life that resonate because they are honest and real kids, marriage, divorce, love, finding out who you really are and what it is you want out of life.

In an age of social media where everyone wants you to see the highlight reel of their lives, Denise let’s you know, life definitely doesn’t always turn out the way you think it’s going to or "should", and that’s ok.

If you live on the east end chances are you’re a Bridge Walker. The way Denise intertwines her daily walks with stories from her past is beautiful.

At one point in the book as she is walking up the steep bridge road she notices a woman running by, hauling ass with her ear buds in listening to some pounding beat to motivate her up the hill. The correlation she makes to the different times in life and how once an avid runner, she now enjoys the walk and listening to the melodic sounds of the nature that surrounds her on the bridge. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. We’ll all get there, its ok to respond to life and take a walk.

I loved reconnecting with an adult from my childhood that I always remembered as warm and funny. Denise was exactly as I remembered her! The book is beautiful and the cover photo taken by Denise’s husband Terry Meehan is a beautiful shot of the Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays where the Meehan’s live and the bridge that Denise walks everyday.

Me Too? More like, Who Hasn't?

Do no harm, but take no shit. – a woman.

Me too. More like, who hasn’t?

This was an impromptu podcast, in light of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the silver lining is that we are now sharing FB posts that say Me too. Shedding light onto the dark subject of women being sexually harassed. After the year we have had of Trump and his talk of his grabbing tendencies, executives being outed and fired for harrassment, everybody's favorite tv Dad Bill Cosby being a rapist. It comes as no shock that the casting couch is a real thing. I love that Harvey is being exposed for the dog that he is, that he has always been, and that everyone who knows him always knew.

I’ve had my own experiences with harassment over the years. I’m sure 99.9% of women, (not a real study- just a guess) Have had to deal with some form or another of harassment.

When it came to the time when I saw my own daughter experience it, I finally felt the shift. I didn’t know better for myself but my mama bear instincts kicked in when I saw my own child deal with it, and as my kids will tell you to this day, don’t mess with us, our mom is crazy.

It made me so angry, my blood was boiling that she was having to deal with this. But it made my husband and Iaware and it made us teach our kids, this is not ok, don’t ever put up with it and don’t ever stand by and watch it happening to someone else without speaking up. We are all responsible for each other.

Know your worth dear, you're priceless.

Kids Mindful Meditation

If every child in the world would be taught meditation, we would eliminate violence from the world in one generation. -Dalai Lama

I got a chance to sit down with Psychologist and Yogi, Colleen Ferone on the podcast today. Colleen is a NYS School Psychologist, a lecturer for the Psychology Department at St. Josephs College as well as a certified Yoga instructor.

She brought all of this knowledge together and created a program she will be teaching at Big Buddha Yoga and Barre in Quogue, NY. The program is called Kids Yoga and Mindful Meditation. And I think it could not have come at a better time.

Kids experience stress and anxiety just like adults do. If we take the time to teach them at a young age that it's ok to feel your feelings think of how much pain and suffering will be eliminated in the long run! Sometimes things are scary and sometimes you're going to be sad and here are some tools for you to have with you wherever you go for the rest of your life. And by the way, every single person you know, no matter what it "seems" like, feels bad sometimes.

Colleen describes the program on the podcast and the different tools and methods she is going to be sharing with the kids. It sounds like an amazing opportunity for parents to introduce their children to coping skills they need to have in the crazy world we are raising our children in.

One of the benefits of a yoga and meditation practice is having self awareness. To be self aware and to take ownership of who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are, what you do well and what do you need to work on and be aware of is an amazing gift to posess and will help you throughout your life. If you have this ability to be responsible, accountable and learn to listen to your body not your mind. Your "gut" instinct never lies and we need to pass on that knowledge that your body will never lie to you, we just have to learn to listen to it.

Team Rubicon

Disasters are our business. Veterans are our passion.

Team Rubicon’s Mission Statement says; Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.

It all started when 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Port-au-Prince Haiti. Two Marines, Jake Wood and William McNulty, along with a handful of first responders decided to grab as much gear as they could and do something. Despite being warned by officials that conditions were to dangerous to go to, they went anyway. When they crossed the Artibonite river that borders between Haiti and the Domicican, they knew there was no turning back, they had crossed their Rubicon.

The Rubicon river was the river that Caesar crossed when he was marching his army into Rome. As it explains on Team Rubicon website, this was the point of no return. With the freedom to not have to deal with red tape, Team Rubicon can get in there and get shit done. No excuses, they just go in and do what needs to be done.

Team Rubicon goes by a set of service principals. They explain service above self is the driving force behind everything they do. As they say, we help people on their worst days. The principals are;

Tenacity

Impartiality

Collaboration

Accountability

Innovation

Not only are they helping people through some of the worst times of their lives, they are also helping veterans transition into civilian life.

Transition is never easy for anyone. I know parents who can’t release the grip on their adult children let alone go from being someone is a extremely high risk, high stress situation where lives depend on decisions made minute to minute. To coming home and trying to go back to taking out the trash and helping the kids with homework. It has to be virtually impossible to do. This organization is making a difference on both ends. It’s a win win, vets get a renewed sense of purpose and civilians who are dealing with disaster get the expertise, skill and knowledge of someone who is used to having roadblocks thrown up at every turn and understands how to improvise, adapt and overcome.

Please check out Team Rubicon and do what you can. Volunteer or donate. We are all in this together!

Health is Wealth with Colette Lettieri

Balance it out -Colette Lettieri

I got a chance to sit down with Health and Lifestyle Coach, Colette Lettieri. Colette's back ground in Social Work and special education combined with her certification as a Health Coach is really the full package in helping people from the individual to the entire family, lead their best, healthiest and happiest lives.

"Balance it out" is a mantra in the Lettieri house. You can't always be eating organic perfect food. Sometimes life gets in the way or you find yourself at a party or a friend's house for a celebration and you have to make a decision to have the wine or eat the birthday cake. No regrets, go ahead and pick a different spot in your week to enable you to "balance it out".

Awareness, accountability, responsibility and ownership is becoming a recurring theme in a lot of my podcasts. We are ultimately responsible for our own health and wellness, it's just nice to know there are people like Colette out there who want to share her knowledge to help other people feel their best. We all run on vibration. You know when someone who has great energy walks into a room and you can just feel it? (subsequently you can also feel the not so great energy, so be responsible for the energy you bring!) That feeling is contagious!! You get around these high vibration people and something amazing occurs, your vibration starts to rise as well! Next thing you know, we are all happier, healthier and more connected to each other as well as our true selves.

So neighbor, I am pulling for you! I want you as happy, healthy, and successful as you can be. Because if you're doing great, than I'm doing great too.

Find Colette at her website http://colettelettieri.com/

Check her out!

9/11 Then and Now with Maura Coughlin Roberti

My friend Maura and I got a chance to sit down together to talk about losing her husband Timmy in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Timmy left Maura and their three children Ryann, Sean and Riley, that morning to go to work only to never come home. Maura talks about life in the days after 9/11 and how it affects her and her family today, finding love again and growing her family with the addition of her and her husband Billy Roberti's son, Kevin.

We talk about how resilient the human spirit is, when the most tragic and unimaginable things can happen in your life you still find the will to get up the next day and go on. Life is always changing and sometimes its a bump in the road and sometimes it's a crater in your path. How are you going to handle it?

I think about the unity we all had in the days after 9/11. United we stood in the days following. I look how divided we are now and it's been through natural disasters we are getting back to understanding that we are here to help each other, not hurt each other.  We need to come together and stop this division before the universe takes off her 70's belt buckle and says come over here and I'll give you something to cry about.

We could have told a million Cogi stories but maybe that should be for another time with a laregr group. Brews will be served.

Work Hard Play Hard!

Peace.

Human Design with Essa

I went to a retreat a few weeks back with my favorite Kundalini Yoga teacher, Essa Keller. She and marketing guru Ashley Steinmetz of Perfect Wave Marketing, did a great job combining Kundalini and how to grow your heart based biz. I loved the combo and invite you to check them both out. The first thing Essa had us do was go to a website jovianarchive.com and down load out free Human Design chart. Within minutes of looking at this chart Essa was able to determine exactly who she was working with and in what way would they get the most out of the weekend retreat. I was fascinated and although we learned invaluable info that weekend, it was the Human Design chart that I became obsessed with knowing more about.

What is Human Design you ask? It's basically a user manual for life. It can help navigate you through life while allowing you to tap into who you really are and how to honor your inner guidance system by making the right decisions based on who you really are. Not as someone's spouse, parent or child, but as you the individual.

Really fascinating and sometimes complicated. But once you understand it, an invaluable tool for life.

Check out the episode! Look for Essa on Instagram essa_keller and follow the link in her bio to get in touch with her or go to somaticsoundhealing.com

As always, if you like what you are hearing please consider leaving a rate and review on itunes! Thank you!

Be you, have fun, get it done. Peace...

Carry The Fire

My father, Jeff Frank, started a school called The Nature Lyceum. It was a labor of love for him and he ignited a fire in people who not only attended the class but taught there as well. Or maybe they ignited the fire? Or everything was up in flames. Regardless, it was a cool school.

Two days a month Jeff would gather a host of teachers, professionals he knew, to come and speak to the students that ranged from a homeowner who wanted to hear more about leaning in to living more holistically to a golf course super trying to make his job and his members lives, a little safer by using organics.

Everyone that taught at the school spoke passionately about their love, mother Earth. These people care, and it showed. You could feel it and it does my heart good to know that in this day and age there are people who will go that extra mile for a cause greater than all of us, our planet.

One of these teachers was my father's friend, and happily now mine, Stephen Storch. Steve is the creator of the Vortex Brewer and practices organic and biodynamic farming in Watermill on the east end of Long Island, NY. My daughter Beth and I got to sit down and chat with Steve, (twice because we had tech difficulties recording the first podcast so he graciously made time for us again!!)

I used to ask my dad after the two day class where SO much info was shared, dad, give me the number 1 thing to take away from this class. While ALL of the info was invaluable, if he had to pick, he always said, Biodynamics. Biodynamics, in my opinion, is where science and spirituality meet. You have to pay attention to the moon and the time of year and make the preps a certain way that involves all of the elements, "so the Earth may be healed". I don't have enough knowledge to give it justice so check out Steve's website naturalscienceorganics.com to see more about what he does to join, as his website says, heritage wisdom with modern technology.

I love getting to sit down and talk to Green Guerilla's. Beth is currently attending Columbia Journalism School and unsurprisingly, she chose the environment as her "beat". Steve was an awesome person to talk to and we always feel like Grandpa is around when in the presence of the good friends he shared his passion with. As I said, my father was a friend in deed. He cared so much, he even wanted to save the world.

Peace

Divorce Course

You either walk inside your story and own it or you stand outside your story & hustle for your worthiness. –Brene Brown

I sat down to chat with my friend Victoria McCooey about a very important topic, domestic violence. After being in an abusive relationship herself, Victoria decided to dedicate herself to helping other women take back control of their lives.

She bravely shares her story in hopes that it will give other people the confidence to leave an abusive relationship.

Victoria became a life coach and eventually a divorce coach. I had never heard of a divorce coach but as she explains, when you’re emotionally beaten down everything becomes harder. She coaches the women who she works with by first and foremost making sure they are practicing self-care. From there you can regain a clear perspective and step by step regain your inner strength that in turn brings everything else, finances, child care, etc into perspective.

I am so grateful that Victoria sat down with me to talk about this very important topic. Thanks Victoria! You are a badass!!

You can reach Victoria on Facebook at The Divorce Course for Women.

Magnificent Goddess'

I said it before and I will say it again! I get to meet the coolest people doing the podcast. Today I sat down with Kundalini teacher, Essa Keller, who has been on the podcast before and award winning PR and Marketing goddess, Ashley Steinmetz. These two have teamed up to hold a retreat this summer on the east end of Long Island called Magnificent Marketing & Kundalini Retreat.

These ladies are passionate about what they do and want you to be to. Empowering women,(men to but this retreat is for the ladies!), who are heart based entrepreneurs to take their business to the next level. A heart based business is not out just to make money, (although that is really important!), but to also provide products and services with the end goal of inspiring, helping and improving the lives of others through their own passion. And these ladies have this in spades.

For so many years heart based entrepreneurs have had a disconnect with the energy that surrounds money. We are leaving the picean age and entering the aquarian age where we are all learning that you can nurture, care for and be vulnerable in business, (which is the bravest thing you could ever be!), and also bring home the damn paycheck that is going to enable you to the the life you are worthy of and deserve!

It makes my heart happy to connect with like minded people. You don't want to preach to the choir all the time and it's nice to be challenged by trying to understand where someone else is coming from, but when you can meet with people who are picking up what your putting down you lift each other up and have the opportunity to run on a higher vibration, as my Scottish friend Stevie Mac says, Magic!

Ashley is offering listeners of the podcast a discounted rate. So if you are out this way sign up! I want to meet you and maybe even share your story on the podcast! If you mention me or the podcast you will not only get the early bird rate she will also send you for no additional cost, a self guided training How To Grow Your Email List Like A Yoga Celeb. I can't wait to check that out as well! Go to Ashley's website to sign up!

Checking In!

Like I have said a million times I get to interact with the coolest people doing this. I follow The Hip Hippy on Instagram. I’m definitely going to do a podcast with her sometime but for now our interactions have been limited to Insta interactions.

Follow her @thehiphippy and check out her Tarot reading skills. (If you are into that sort of thing, and I am!)

She has Tarot Tuesday where she sets 3 cards out and you pick a card by commenting left, middle or right and then check back that night for the reading.

I usually think about a question I have about something that is currently happening in my life and sometimes it’s a biggie and sometimes it isn’t. This time it was a biggie and the answer that I got was so encouraging I wanted to share it here.

The card was the six of wands and she said, this card indicates that you have harnessed your strengths and talents in order to bring about a successful outcome in your endeavors. You have managed to get through the confusion of the 5 wands, minimizing your distractions and focusing on the task at hand. You have overcome the challenges along the way, and now you are focusing your energies on the one goal that will lead you to your success. This is your time to shine and come out on top. This card is such a positive encouragement to believe in who you are and your accomplishments so far.

Wow! Right? Amazing. Super excited for what the future holds and I look forward to sharing that here with you. All in good time.

I also wanted to tell you, if you don’t already know about this amazing 4 part series on HBO that I recently watched called, The Defiant Ones. I didn’t even know what it was about; they just had me at defiant ones.

Turns out it’s about Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre and how as HBO puts it, through decades of defiance and determination two street kids, (with no formal education), created empires.

Ultimately with each other as partners but it follows their individual lives until they teamed up and produced Eminem’s first album Slim Shady. (Which by the way they have footage of Dre playing the opening beats and Eminem automatically start saying my name is, my name is. And at that moment, they both knew it was going to be something big and that was within 10 minutes of meeting each other.

This series is not just for rap fans however. It is an epic story of over coming insurmountable odds by working your ass off and never ever giving up. Obstacles come at you but you have to learn to dodge and weave and sometimes start all over again.

Great moment when Dre was standing on his Malibu back deck and he sees Jimmy walking up and he comes up and Dre tells him I just got an offer to do a sneaker line but I don’t think that’s for me, it doesn’t feel right. I don’t know anything about sneakers or fashion. I only know speakers and headphones. And Jimmy was like, ok then that’s what we will do. And by the next day they were testing every headphone made and deciding which one would become Beats by Dr.Dre. They got every friend who was in music or an athlete to wear them. Jimmy was a marketing genius and pretty soon all athletes wanted beats to the point that when the Olympics came around they manufactured them to come in every color of every flag participating so every athlete competing were wearing beats. And since The Olympics is such a corrupt moneymaker them selves that they finally banned Beats because if they weren’t an official sponsor, i.e., if the Olympics weren’t making money off of it, then no go. Which of course made Beats even more news and noteworthy. And then Apple bought them for 3 billion dollars. And they all lived happily ever after.

But forget the wealth because both of these men came from Compton and Brooklyn respectively. They came from nothing and lived amongst chaos and grew up and gave back so much to their own communities and the world at large. After Jimmy’s father died unexpectedly he ended up producing A Very Special Christmas Album that raised millions of dollars in his father’s name to the Special Olympics.

Dre has given back to Compton High School trying to make it an inviting place to make kids want to go to school. He says at one point, what kid wants to go to school? I hated school; everybody did where I come from.

When you grow up in chaos, you are in survival mode and when you have to worry about really big things it’s almost impossible to have to wrap your head around normal things like homework and getting to class on time.

School is for some people and not for everyone. Both of these super successful people both maintain that school was not for them. If you know what you want and what you love then no matter what anyone else says, go for it.

It isn’t going to be easy and you are going to have to work your ass off. But if you are relentless and unapologetically determined. Stay true to your self, don’t conform. Don’t worry about pleasing everyone and stick with it, eventually your path will flow right where it’s supposed to be.

At one point Jimmy says, “Listen, they put blinders on a racehorse because when you are a champion you’re running after something with everything you’ve got, you don’t need to look right or left at what everyone else is doing. You have laser focus on that prize at the end and you go for it and you never, ever give up. Stay in the saddle.

The Kids Are Alright

I love my modern family. My parents got divorced when I was a kid and my father remarried a woman who had a 2 year old daughter who, when I was 12, became my sister. And her cousins became my cousins and my cousins became theirs.

They are salt of the Earth people. The kind you can call at 3am and say I need you and they say, I'm on my way. As we would do for them. Subsequently our parents divorced as well but we remained a family.

Even when my stepmother Jessie remarried, my kids would say how is Uncle Ralph our uncle? Well he is grandpa's second wife's third husband. But who cares, love is love.

I sat down with my sister and my cousins kids to chat about Jocko Willink's kids book, Way of The Warrior Kid. I heard him on Joe Rogan and started listening to his podcast. (If my father were alive he would be addicted to listening to Jocko's stories of being a Navy Seal for over 20 years.)

The book is about honor, integrity, character, being humble, working hard and standing up for what is right. It's a book that in this day and age should be required reading for every middle school kid. They did not know what a podcast even was but they were great. It's short but sweet since they were more interested in getting back to playing outside than sitting but take a listen. More importantly, get the book and pass it on.

Be you, Have fun, Get it done.

Kundalini

Amid the swirling, confusing, unfocused energies of the modern world, there is a light, a calm healing in the center of all things. -Yogi Bhajan

I think what I love THE MOST about doing this podcast is that I get to meet and talk to the greatest people. We come together, talk about something that is interesting, uplifting or just plain old cool and share it with like minded people. It is such a pleasure and a gift to share good info with everyone who wants it. Essa and I had a great chat about her passion, which is Kundalini Yoga.

As with everything being consistent is what is key to healing. What heals you is what resonates with you. Maybe what works for me isn't what is going to work for you. We are all individuals who need different things. I guess that goes back to you be you and I'll be me!

You vegan? Awesome! You feel best sticking to a paleo diet? Cool. It's important for us all to listen to our bodies tell us what is right for us in every way. Awareness is key to healing. Once you become aware and present you can make a difference in your life. At first maybe you start to notice, wow, I get a stomach ache every time I eat ice cream...Hmm, well I am not giving up ice cream! But over time you pick your spots when you have ice cream because you know, it means your going to have a belly bomb. And then after awhile, maybe you decide feeling better is worth skipping the ice cream. I'll take the fruit. That is how you begin! And that goes with every aspect of life. They way you allow people to treat you, your diet and your practices. Just start by becoming aware.
